Earthquakes are not the first thing that comes to mind when considering your homeowners insurance. Maybe it should be. South Carolina is one of 16 states that have been designated as high risk by the Geological Survey. We currently have 15-20 earthquakes per year in our state, though most of them are weak enough to be imperceptible. Few insurance companies even offer earthquake insurance any more and even fewer will structure the coverage to cover brick homes or buildings (which should give you a hint). It is NOT covered under your standard homeowners policy. Usually you have to purchase a stand alone policy like I did. Earthquake insurance is not cheap, thus the reason most homeowners do not purchase the coverage. However, if you have a brick veneer home like I do I figure it's cheaper than having to pay off my mortgage - with no house to live in.
